The village

In the heart of the Vosges de Nord Regional Nature Park, at the gateway to Lorraine, Alsace and Germany, the village with its 700 inhabitants, takes its name from the bears that were thought to have roamed the valley years ago.

The Forest

Nowadays, there are no longer bears roaming the forest but stags, deer, wild boar and foxes which are forever present in this walking paradise surrounding the village.

The Water

The fisherman's haven, the “grand étang” or 'big lake' which can be found at the western end of the village, is also a bird reserve. It is situated in a 'Biosphere Reserve' designated by UNESCO. The Zinsel du Nord, a 1st grade river, flows through the length of the village. There is also an place converted for swimming at the leisure area known as 'Ramstein Plage'.

Countryside and Tourism

For nearly 100 years, the natural resort of Baerenthal has been a key position for tourism in Pays de Bitche but it has preserved its natural countryside because the community has adapted to the flow of tourists and managed to avoid the anarchic building of second homes. Their efforts were rewarded in 1987 when the village was attributed with the label “Station Verte”.
